Nelson's Sparrow

Nelson’s Sparrow, Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow, Sharp-tailed Sparrow, Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow, Saltmarsh Sparrow?  They are a confusing lot!  This blog post will try to straighten them out, concentrating on the Nelson’s Sparrow.


The Nelson’s Sparrow (Ammodramus nelsoni) and the Saltmarsh Sparrow (Ammodramus caudacutus) were formerly thought to be the same species. Old field guides (prior to 1998) refer to these two species as one species called the Sharp-tailed Sparrow.  But their songs, plumage and genetics differed leading to further study and the separation of the two species, designated Nelson’s Sparrow and Saltmarsh Sparrow.  Where the range of the Atlantic race of the Nelson’s Sparrow overlaps with the Saltmarsh Sparrow, occasionally hybrids occur. 


It is thought that the two species diverged about 11,000 years ago as the glaciers from the last glaciation period retreated.  The closest living relative of these two species is the Seaside Sparrow from which they separated about 600,000 years ago. The Nelson’s Sparrow is named after Edward William Nelson, Chief of the US Bureau of Biological Survey from 1916 to 1927.  He was the first to collect this species in 1874 when he was 18 years old.


The Nelson’s Sparrow breeds in two distinct geographic areas of North America.  The Atlantic race breeds on coastal areas of Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the St. Lawrence River area of Quebec.  The interior race breeds in the prairie region of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the western coastal area of Hudson Bay and James Bay, southern Northwest Territories, North Dakota and Minnesota.  They winter along coastal areas of Texas eastward to Florida and up the east coast of Florida to Virginia.  


The preferred habitat is tidal wetlands with salt meadows of cordgrass, saltgrass and salt marsh rushes and sometimes wet grasslands next to rivers where slough grass and scaly sedge grow.  Wintering birds can be found in tidal salt and brackish marshes near ocean coastlines.  The interior population breeds in freshwater marshes dominated by tall grasses like cord grass, cattail, and bulrushes.

The Nelson’s Sparrow is a small secretive bird about 12 cm long (the Song Sparrow is 17 cm long).  It has an orange-buff triangle on its face with a gray cheek, median crown stripe and nape.  Its lightly streaked buff-coloured breast contrasts sharply with its white belly.  It has black and white stripes on its back and its wings are tinged with rufous.  Its tail is narrow and the tail feathers are sharply pointed.  Both genders look similar. 


For identification this species needs to be distinguished from the Saltmarsh Sparrow and LeConte’s Sparrow.  The Saltmarsh Sparrow is very similar but it has more defined facial features, and crisply streaked under parts and a white throat. The face and breast of the Nelson’s Sparrow is an undifferentiated orange. Contrasting with the LeConte’s Sparrow, the Nelson’s has a grayish central crown stripe, an unstreaked gray nape, distinct white lines on the back, and a larger bill. Because these three species are so similar one needs to study the graphic depictions carefully for accurate identification.

The Nelson's sparrow forages and rests on or near the ground, making only short flights.  The displaying males will make fast flights skimming over the marsh vegetation.  The females will occasionally make lookout flights hovering over the vegetation.  The males sing frequently at night but they will quit if another male appears.  The males territorial ranges often overlap.  This causes frequent fights and chases.  The males often follow the females around protecting them from other males.  The males do not participate in nest site selection, building or rearing the young.  Scientists have found this species practices male-dominance polygyny in which a small proportion of males mate with a disproportionate share of females.  This includes mating with unwilling females at times.  LeConte’s Sparrows and Savannah Sparrows are known to chase Nelson’s Sparrows where their territories overlap.


Nelson’s Sparrows nest in marsh vegetation close to the ground.  The female builds a cup-shaped nest of dry grass and stems and attaches it to vegetation.  In it she lays 3 to 7 light green eggs heavily spotted with brown.  The eggs are incubated for 11 days.  After the young fledge small flocks feed on seeds of cordgrass. Nelson’s Sparrows eat mainly insects, aquatic invertebrates and seeds.  They forage mainly on the ground or in the marsh vegetation and are known to probe the mud for food.  


The song of this sparrow is distinctive.  It has been described as a ‘hiss that drops off at the end’.  It is a very raspy trill depicted as ptshhhhhhh-uk.  The call note is tsik.  The Nelson’s Sparrow is difficult to see because it often will run along the ground rather than flush.  It does not usually respond to spishing.


The global population of the Nelson’s Sparrow is considered stable although there have been population declines due to loss of habitat from the draining of marshes, the development of shorelines and sea level rise due to global warming. 


The Saltmarsh Sparrow is one we New Brunswick birders need to be watching for.  Its breeding range is along the Atlantic coastline from Florida to southern Maine.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it showed up here occasionally.  It would be wise to learn to differentiate it from the Nelson’s Sparrow which is relatively common here.  


We are fortunate to have healthy shorelines and marshes here in New Brunswick to support a population of the Nelson’s Sparrow.  They must play an important role in the marsh and tidal shoreline ecosystem.

A Dance of Sandhill Cranes

At this time of year the Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) are moving through our province on their way to northern breeding grounds.  These areas include northern Ontario, areas of Quebec around James Bay, the prairie provinces, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and the Arctic  Islands.  Sandhill Cranes are also found in the northeastern part of Siberia. 


It is possible to see a ‘dance’ of Sandhill Cranes over New Brunswick at this time of year.  ‘Dance’ is one of the many terms used for a group of cranes.  Please search this blog for more information on the Sandhill Crane.


Nine Sandhill Cranes have been resting and feeding on Sugar Island, upriver from Fredericton in the St. John River for the past few days (seen on May 26).  I haven’t heard of quite this number seen in New Brunswick before.  Does this represent a ‘dance’?


The Sandhill Crane is mainly a western species but is also found in eastern North America.  Sandhill Cranes like to frequent the edges of bodies of water.  The central Platte River valley in Nebraska is their most important stopover during migration.  About 450,000 cranes migrate through there annually.  It is from the habitat in that area that the Sandhill Crane gets its common name.


Although the general population numbers of this species are doing well, in the past some of the southern races were drastically reduced due to hunting and habitat loss.  Most of these have recovered to acceptable but low levels.  The eastern race must be doing well resulting in more sightings here in New Brunswick in recent years.


Migratory flocks of Sandhill Cranes take different routes depending on where they breed.  In the east, the birds fly from Florida northward east of the Mississippi River and west of the coastal states to the Maritime provinces and northward to their breeding areas.


Sandhill Cranes in flight are distinctive.  Their wings are held out straight, ‘plank like’, at 90ยบ to their bodies.  Their necks are held straight out in front and their legs straight out behind.  Their wingbeat is steady, slow and regular.  When flying in groups but short distances they form a line.  When flying great distances as in migration they fly in a ‘V’ formation.  Occasionally they will fly in formation with geese.  


How do you tell a flying Great Blue Heron from a flying Sandhill Crane?  Herons fly with their head and neck folded back and their wings are bowed downward.  Their legs are held straight out behind.  


The wonderful group of Sandhill Cranes we saw on Sugar Island were both resting and feeding.  They were skillful at avoiding the farm machinery that was busily working the fields.  We had to make 4 tries to eventually see them on that huge island.  They were safely placed in the middle of a huge field, in a hollow a long distance away from any possible way to get close to them.  We viewed them from about 600-800 metres.  That made photographing them very difficult.  See the poor photo below.

Even at that distance I enjoyed watching their behaviour.  They were doing a lot of wing flapping and jumping up and down.  I wondered if they were getting restless to continue their migration or if it was courting behaviour.  At that distance unfortunately we could not hear any sound from this normally vocal species. 


A lot of research has been done on North American cranes, both a dwindling subspecies of the Sandhill Crane and the Whooping Crane.  We are all familiar with the intense successful research work done on restoring the Whooping Crane from near extinction.  Of interest in this post is that the Sandhill Crane was part of this attempt to restore the Whooping Crane.  Sandhill Cranes were used to raise Whooping Cranes by putting Whooping Crane eggs in their nests. Even though the Whooping Crane eggs hatched and the young were raised by the Sandhill Cranes, the endeavour failed because the Whooping Crane chicks imprinted on the Sandhill Cranes and would not later identify with Whooping Cranes.  They attempted to pair with Sandhill Cranes and were unsuccessful.


I was delighted to view this large group of Sandhill Cranes in their stopover near Fredericton.  I had many conversations with the farmers and told them about the life history of this important species.  They are as interested in protecting these birds as we are!

Summer Tanager Visits

A Summer Tanager, Piranga rubra, was seen in the Saint John area in April and into May, 2024.  It was coming to a feeder so some birders were able to take beautiful photos.  It is a second-year male in transition plumage from yellow-green to scarlet.  Needless to say, it is a beautiful bird.  See the photo above.


Summer Tanagers are members of the  Cardinalidae family which they share with some grosbeaks, cardinals, buntings and the Dickcissel.  Most members of this family have males with bright plumage and large conical shaped bills.  Our most common tanager is the Scarlet Tanager which breeds here in summer and is found in the tree tops of mature deciduous forests.  Occasionally a Western Tanager or a Summer Tanager appears here.  That is what this blog post is about, the appearance of a Summer Tanager.


The breeding male Summer Tanager is unmistakable with its scarlet plumage overall and its greyish bill and dark legs.  The female plumage is variable from pale greyish to orange-red.  Sometimes it requires attention to shape, call notes or the colour of the dorsal feathers between the wings to identify some females.  Pete Dunne describes the female plumage and that of immature birds as mustard yellow showing little or no contrast between wings and back, a few showing patches of orange (Pete Dunne's Essential Field Guide Companion, Houghton Mifflin Company 2006).

The Summer Tanager is larger than the Scarlet Tanager, 20 cm compared to 18 cm in length. Male Summer Tanagers are easy to tell from male Scarlet Tanagers because the Scarlet Tanagers have black wings.  The females are more difficult.  The female Scarlet Tanager has black or very dark wings.  The female Summer Tanager’s wings are only minimally darker than the body.  Some female Summer Tanagers show red or orange in their plumage and the female Scarlet Tanagers show only yellowish green or yellow.  The female Summer Tanager has a yellow undertail surface which is lacking in the female Scarlet Tanager.  The Summer Tanager has a longer bill and tail than the Scarlet Tanager.


Summer Tanagers nest 3 to 12 metres up in mature oak or pine trees on a horizontal limb.  The nest is sometimes very loosely made of grass, stems and moss and lined with fine grasses.  Sometimes the nest is so poorly made the eggs are visible from below.  The nests of the western members of this species build their nests more compactly.  Three to five light bluish green eggs marked with brown are incubated 11 to 12 days by the female.  Adults feed on insects and fruits and are known to feed on bees and wasps.  They forage in the tops of trees and glean insects from twigs and leaves and occasionally sally out for flying insects.  When they catch bees and wasps they bring them to a perch and remove the stinger before eating by beating it against the branch.  This species also readily comes to feeders which is a good reason our visitor has stayed around.


It is quite unusual for our visitor to be here.  The normal range of the Summer Tanager is not close to here.  They breed usually south of a line from southern New Jersey to southeastern Nebraska.  They winter in Mexico and in Central and South America.  It is rare but somewhat regular for them to overshoot and end up in the northeast.

The Summer Tanager is a robust singer.  The song is a hurried whistled series of 2 to 4 note phrases which sound a bit like an oriole.  The song usually consists of 3 to 10 sets of phrases followed by a pause and then another set.  The Scarlet Tanager’s song is harsher and slower and less melodic.


The history of the naming of this species is interesting.  It was first formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 as Fringilla rubra.  But he based his description on a bird described by Mark Catesby as the ‘summer red-bird’ in his book, The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands published in 1729-1732.  Catesby called it the ‘Summer Red Bird’.  That gave rise to the generic name, Piranga which is from the Tupi word, Tijepiranga, which means ‘small unknown bird’.  The rubra in the scientific name means ‘red’, of course.  So the Summer Tanager is named from ‘small unknown red bird’.  


With nomenclature aside we are happy to occasionally have this species visit our province.  It is not really very small and we are familiar with it so it is no longer the ‘small unknown red bird’.

The Dance of the Nuthatch

This week I saw a White-breasted Nuthatch dance.  Never before in my long years of bird watching have I seen this.  Have you seen a nuthatch dance?

The White-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta carolinensis, is a common visitor to our feeders.  It especially likes the homemade suet cakes and the debris from the cakes falling on the tray below as Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers feed.  This week I saw a White-breasted Nuthatch do a dance as it approached the feeding tray.  I had never seen this remarkable behaviour before.  So began a search for more information.

Sibley’s, National Geographic, Bent, Dunne and many more failed to enlighten me.  ‘This is unique,’  I thought.  I certainly had never seen it before.  

Ahh, the Internet.  It provided pertinent information including videos.  The dancing nuthatches I saw there did not perform like mine but this is what they were doing:  the bird was standing very tall with its tail tip touching the ground (downed horizontal tree in this case).  The wings were widely spread and the bird weaved its body slowly and rhythmically back and forth as it moved delicately forward.  It was an interesting sight which even drew my attention!  [Reference: Youtube, Dance of the Nuthatch!]

What I saw was similar and abbreviated but just as beautiful.  My dancer was moving slowly along the railing of the deck towards the feeding tray and did its dance for a metre distance as it approached.  The bird’s body was not upright but held at about 30ยบ to 45ยบ and was slowly and rhythmically weaving back and forth.  The wings were minimally held to the side.  This dancer was moving its body from side to side at 45ยบ to the forward line with the body still facing downward (not facing forward like in the video).  It was doing wonderful footwork as it performed this repetitive motion.  If there had been a way to view its tracks afterward, you would see a beautiful foot pattern.  The body made a herringbone patten as it weaved its way to the target.  When it got  a couple of body lengths from the feeding tray it stopped, looked around as if to see if any bird was watching and then hopped onto the tray to feed. I was totally impressed, wishing it would do it again.

What more do we know about this?  According to Birdipedia, the White-breasted Nuthatch is a monogamous species.  Pairs form following courtship during which the male performs for the female. He bows to the female, spreads his tail and droops his wings and sways back and forth.  He also feeds her.  

This courting behaviour is only a small segment of what I saw and what is described as the ‘dance’.  The beautiful manoeuvres I saw were performed for no other bird.  The bird seemed to do it out of pure joy.  It looked like he/it was celebrating the beautiful spring day, the breeding season and the fact that he probably had his female now sitting on the nest in the box they usually use along our hedgerow.  I could actually feel his joy.  I wish I had been able to video it in order to share it with you.

Total Eclipse of the Sun 8 April 2024

New Brunswick was in the path of a total eclipse of the sun on 8 April 2024.  Fredericton was on that path that ran southwest to northeast.  The day was bright and sunny with almost clear skies in the Fredericton area.  The temperature was 17ยบC with light winds at 19 km/h.   The humidity was 19%.  A perfect day for viewing an eclipse!

Our house was in the path of the total eclipse so we were able to view it from our deck.  We had the cardboard viewing glasses which had been generously handed out to us in the weeks prior to the event.  The sun was so intense we were somewhat afraid to use them.  We tried a welding helmet but it did not give enough protection.  We had read beforehand that welding protection varied and only ones with a high level of protection were safe.  

What to do?  We set up a telescope, cut a circle out of cardboard and mounted it over the objective end and secured it with tape.  This created a shadow on the viewing area making the image better for viewing.  A white sheet of paper was mounted to a board which was held 6 to 12 inches from the ocular end of the scope and the image of the eclipse was projected onto the white sheet.  The way our deck is located we could stand in the shade and the scope could be directed at the sun, making our stance for the event much more comfortable.  It was difficult to locate the sun in the scope and get the image on the board because the sun was so intense and lining it was up was difficult.  When we succeeded it was amazing how good the image was.  This, however, was compounded by the movement of the sun.  We had to relocate the telescope almost every time I wanted to take a photograph.  I tried my iPhone at first to photograph the image but found that my Nikon P900 worked best.  Below are some of the photographs showing the approach of the moon to totality.

It was very interesting to observe nature as the eclipse took place.  It got much colder, much like what one would experience at twilight.  We started at 17ยบC, one of our warmest days yet this spring.  As we got closer to totality, we had to put on a fleecy or jacket to be comfortable.  As totality was approaching, and to nature it appeared that twilight was approaching, the birds got excited.  The geese kept standing on the floodplain below us and appeared on high alert honking to one another.  The Redwings and Grackles gathered in the trees along the shoreline and were very vocal.  They appeared to be calling their flock together.  Soon they departed presumably for their nocturnal roosting site.  The woodpeckers and finches came to the feeder for their 'before bed' snacks.  The waterfowl left the river probably to go to their safe overnight areas.  As the darkness approached and thickened all became quiet, eerily quiet.  And, it was only about 4:30 PM.  

When the eclipse was total we were able to look at it with naked eyes and I was able to photograph it directly.  It surprised me (although it should not have) how short the totality was.  As the moon moved past the sun things slowly brightened up and warmed up just like at dawn.  The colours of the landscape were magnificent, yellows, oranges, peaches, moving to purples, dark greens and blues to darkness and then back to yellows, etc. as 'dawn' came and it soon became day again, not a new day but the same day.  At that point life returned to normal with traffic, the sounds of human activity.  

What about the birds?  The birds resumed activity only in a minor way.  The flocks of blackbirds, finches and waterfowl did not return.  Only a few birds returned to the feeder and yard.  As the day ended and 'normal' darkness fell upon us, I saw our resident Great Horned Owl perched in a tree by the river.  Only his silhouette was discernible but I could see the identifying ear tufts.  The second end to a wonderful day.

Common Snapping Turtle

The Common Snapping Turtle hatchling shown in the photo above was found on 10 July 2023 in New Brunswick on the portage between the Musquash watershed and the southern part of Loch Alva. I was participating in the 2023 Biota conducted by the New Brunswick Museum and we were hiking out after a full day of botany survey around Loch Alva. The area was sandy and gravelly and on the trail was a large puddle about 6 inches (15 cm) deep. As I stepped over it I noticed dark creatures moving in the water that turned out to be two Common Snapping Turtle hatchlings. They may have been confused, thinking they had found the lake. After photographing one I returned it to the puddle with its hatch mate, hoping they would eventually find their way to the lake. 


In the photos above and below, notice the dark black colour of the head and legs, the pointed snout and the closeness of the eyes to the snout. The carapace was soft and showed smears of mud. The turtle was about 4 to 5 inches long although I did not actually measure it. The other hatchling looked the same and also appeared lively.

These hatchlings undoubtedly hatched shortly before we found them from a nest buried in a sandy bank nearby. See the photo below of an adult female who buried herself in a sand bank and was laying her eggs.  (The photos below are of a nesting area on the shores of Grand Lake.)

About 20 to 40 eggs are laid by the female who carefully buries them in the warm sand before leaving to resume her normal activities in the pond. The eggs are round and about the size of pingpong balls. The shells are bluish white in colour and are leathery. See the photo below of a nest of a Common Snapping Turtle showing eggs.

The photo below shows a sand dune along the shores of Grand Lake, NB, and you can see adult female turtles active at their nesting area. I visited this area and you could see some laying and some moving about the surface. Unfortunately there were several nests that had been predated, probably by raccoons. There were empty egg shells scattered about.

The warmth of the sand on these exposed banks causes the eggs to hatch. The female usually lays the eggs in May and June. The time it takes depends on the temperature and humidity. It can take as much as 60 to 90 days to hatch. In our example above, it obviously took less time than that. 


Let’s backtrack now to the general life history of the Common Snapping Turtle. That will bring us up to the finding of hatchlings on their way to the mother pond. 


The Common Snapping Turtle is a species of freshwater turtle in the family of Chelydridae. It is found in New Brunswick and is our largest land turtle.  Sea turtles can be much larger. The species range extends from southern Alberta east to Nova Scotia and south to the Gulf of Mexico and into central Texas. These turtles are found in permanent fresh water ponds, lakes and rivers.

What does this special turtle look like? See the internet photo above which shows an adult. Actually if you meet an adult in real life, it will look more ferocious than this! The Snapping Turtle can be large. The carapace (shell) of adults can grow up to 14 inches long (20-36 cm) and they can weigh up to 35 lbs (16 kg). Males can be larger than females. The carapace is well armoured and shows a sharply toothed rear edge. Good identifying features are the small plastron (underneath part of the carapace), the pointed snout and the spikes on the tail. The colour varies from dark brown, tan, gray to almost black. 


I once visited a pond in New York State where a friend caught a very large Snapping Turtle. It weighed at least 30 lbs and had a carapace at least 12 inches long. When you add the head and tail to the measurement, you are seeing a very big turtle!


Common Snapping Turtles can live to be 50 to 100 years old! Studies have shown that they often return to the same nesting area each year. Adults do not breed until they are about 20 years old. That leaves a long time for young turtles to live and move around their habitat before they can reproduce. In winter they hibernate on the bottom of ponds.


What do they eat? Their diet is diverse. They consume carrion, aquatic invertebrates, small vertebrates and aquatic plants. They will take fish, small waterfowl, and frogs.


So, is their population stable? Well, they are declining. Being our ‘toughest’ turtle that is a little surprising. One cause is predation at the nest on the eggs as described above and some mortality of hatchlings as they make their way to the pond. If we had been a coyote or fox when we found the two hatchlings in the puddle, they certainly would not have made it. Mortality of adults in their water habitat is fairly small. They have no predators. Some mortality is caused by fishers who mistakenly catch them in their nets and on lines. Please carefully remove the turtles and safely return them to the water. 


What causes the most mortality? During breeding season, turtles are on the move. This brings adults out of their water habitats and onto roads, trails, agricultural areas, etc. They are seeking exposed sandy areas in which to make their nests. Shoulders of roads, bridges, and railways make good nesting areas in their eyes. Here humans cause the most significant mortality of this species. Many adults get killed by motor vehicles and agricultural machinery each year. I suspect most of us have seen turtles on the road in the late spring and early summer. I certainly have. One example was a dead Snapping Turtle on Highway 3 near Lawrence Station. It had left the Magaguadavic watershed to find a sandy nesting area. With increased 4-wheeler traffic in our wilderness areas, human-caused mortality will only increase. Other enemies of this species are foxes, coyotes, skunks, minks, fishers, raccoons, crows, herons, hawks, owls, bullfrogs, fish and snakes.


What do you do if you find a Snapping Turtle on the roadway or trail or in danger in some other place? It is not wise to try to pick it up without knowing that they can inflict a severe bite. A large Snapper is capable of biting off a finger. Leather gloves would be a definite asset. The experts advise to not try to push or scoot the turtle across the pavement of the roadway. That would cause abrasion wounds on their tender underside. Large specimens can be ‘wheel barrowed’ across the road. You can safely raise the turtle by its tail end and walk it on its front feet off the road. Carefully place your hands on each side of the tail and grab the carapace and gently lift it up so its hind legs are free and it will walk along on its front feet. haven’t done this but apparently it works!.  Do not place your hands farther forward than this because the turtle can reach you with its mouth!   Take it to the area to which it was headed. 


The biggest cause of mortality of this species is human influence. We can do our part by saving any individuals we find in dangerous circumstances. Knowing that it takes many years before this species can even reproduce and the one you find has probably survived many dangers already, it behooves us to be diligent about saving and protecting it. Let’s be good citizens and protect all members of our wild fauna.  Let's give that Snapper a chance to reach 100 years!
